Improving the lives of horses and humans in our community through education and assistance

Mustangs To The Rescue

Central Oregon’s Community Equine Rescue, Rehabilitation & Adoption

About Us

The unwanted horse. The abused horse. The neglected horse. The horse whose loving owner died and didn’t have an after plan. The horse whose owner suffered financial hardship. These are the horses we help.

The mission of Mustangs To The Rescue, an all-breed, all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit equine rescue, is to positively impact the community we serve by supporting horses, their owners and potential owners, with assistance, resources and educational opportunities, thus improving the lives of horses and humans in our community.

Mustangs To The Rescue was founded by Kate Beardsley. As a professional horse trainer, riding instructor, wrangler and program director, Kate has numerous years of experience working in veterinarian clinics and served as board member with Oregon Equestrian Trails, Back Country Horsemen of Oregon, and Central Oregon Wild Horse Coalition among others. Privately funded by Kate and special donors in the past, the rescue incorporated officially as Mustangs To The Rescue in 2012 and became an official 501(c)(3) in June of 2014.

Mustangs To The Rescue not only rescues horses but also their humans.

Equine Rescue Program

Rescuing horses is one of the most challenging yet rewarding programs we offer to our community.

Our Equine Rescue Program was established to help prevent abuse, neglect and abandonment of at-risk horses.  We work with community members, as well as local, state, and national authorities to discover at-risk horses and encourage people to rehome horses they can no longer care for properly.

Horses accepted into our Equine Rescue Program are horses that we feel, with proper training and rehabilitation, we will be able to rehome.  We simply do not have the capacity to provide long -term sanctuary for unwanted horses.

Once rescued, the horse(s) are transported to Mustangs To The Rescue or a pre-approved foster home.

Mustangs To The Rescue is not funded by any local, or state government entity. Paying for hay, feed, medical, farrier, dental, and transportation expenses is a constant struggle and we rely on the financial support of individuals and businesses.

Our experienced volunteers consult with licensed healthcare professionals, farriers and alternative therapy practitioners to determine the proper care for all horses. Horses in our care receive proper nutrition, physical and behavioral therapies and lots of love. Once rescued, experienced horsemen and women with strong equestrian skills work with horses in our rehabilitation and retraining programs.

Educational Outreach

Mustangs To The Rescue helps our local community by providing horse owners and potential horse owners with assistance, educational opportunities, and resources to ensure safe and secure homes for our equine partners.

We believe that by providing educational opportunities that promote public education and awareness, develop horsemanship skills and responsible horse ownership, we can make a greater impact on the health and welfare of the horses in our community.

Our educational opportunities include on-site training, clinics, and seminars such as Basic Horsemanship, Barn and Equine Safety, Equine Body Language, Equine Sign Language, Equine Air Scenting, Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue, Pasture Management, Trail Course Practice, and more!

Equine Roles of Service

Part of our mission is to elevate the public’s view of wild horses by placing them in roles of service such as Search and Rescue, Packing Services, and Mounted Patrols.

Donating a Horse

As fellow horse owners we understand that parting with your beloved friend is one of the toughest decisions you may ever have to make. And if we could we would bring all of the unwanted, abused, neglected and abandoned horses home with us, but we can’t…

Sadly, Mustangs To The Recue is not able to take every horse brought to our attention, just like you, we  have physical and financial limitations.

We are often at full capacity, because of the sheer number of unwanted, abused, neglected, and abandoned horses. Please keep in mind Mustangs To The Rescue is a rescue and not a sanctuary. Horses accepted into our program are horses that we feel, with proper retraining and rehabilitation, we will be able to rehome.  We simply do not have the capacity to provide long-term sanctuary for unwanted horses.

Because of the commitment we make to each horse in our care, we keep the number of horses at Mustangs To The Rescue at a level we can safely manage. When we have the space and finances available to take in additional horses, Mustangs To The Rescue will review the needs of the horses on our waiting list. Law enforcement seizures are at the top of the list, horses whose owners have exhausted all other options and that we feel we can rehome are next on the list. When we are not able to receive an animal, we still work hard to provide assistance in other ways.
